ACUPUNCTURE FAQ

WHAT CAN YOU TREAT WITH ACUPUNCTURE?

Acupuncture works well for many ordinary health problems. Here are some areas which tend to respond very well to acupuncture:

Acupuncture is well-suited for people who are dealing with chronic health problems that can only be managed and not cured. As these folks are generally on lots of medications with side effects, acupuncture can improve the quality of life by improving mood, sleep and overall energy without creating more side effects.

Because acupuncture treats specific problems by bringing all of the body's systems into balance, issues peripheral to the chief complaint often improve as well. This happens frequently even when the acupuncturist has not been specifically treating issues other than the chief complaints.

WHAT IS ACUPUNCTURE?

Acupuncture is the insertion of thin, sterile, disposable needles into superficial areas of the body to stimulate the body's own natural healing ability. It is naturally simple, safe and effective. Acupuncture is one of the oldest, most dependable and internationally practiced medical therapies.

HOW DOES ACUPUNCTURE WORK?

Acupuncture stimulates special receptors which communicate with the central nervous, endocrine and cardiovascular systems. This causes the release of natural pain-killing substances as well as the dilation of blood vessels delivering oxygen and nutrient-rich blood, hormones and immune factors to sick areas of the body.  Modern scientific research studies reveal that acupuncture induces pain relief, protects the body against infections and regulates various physiological functions. The therapeutic effects are brought about through this regulatory effect on various bodily systems. Research reveals that the regulatory effects are bi-directional: acupuncture lowers blood pressure in hypertensive patients and raises it in hypotensive patients; it increases gastric secretions in hypoacidic patients and decreases it in those with hyperacidity. Acupuncture itself seldom aggravates conditions.  Because acupuncture's therapeutic actions occur through mobilization of the body's own potential for healing, it does not lead to adverse effects such as those seen with drug therapies.

For more detailed information on the therapeutic actions of acupuncture, please refer to Section 1.6, Studies on Therapeutic Mechanisms, on page 6 of the previously referenced World Health Organization document on acupuncture:

IS ACUPUNCTURE PAINFUL?

Acupuncture needles are sterile and only used once and discarded. They are solid, flexible and extremely thin.  Most people barely notice a thing when the needles are inserted, but sometimes a brief pinch is felt.  Certain sensations related to the therapeutic effects are sometimes noticed while the needles are in place: tingling, mild achiness, heaviness, numbness, distended feelings and "electric" sensations. Any mild discomfort is usually only temporary.  Most people find acupuncture to be very relaxing, enjoy a short nap during the treatment, and wake up feeling refreshed.

IS IT POSSIBLE TO COMBINE ACUPUNCTURE WITH CHIROPRACTIC/MEDICATION/MASSAGE/EXERCISE/ETC?

Certainly.  You can combine acupuncture with almost any other medical treatment modality: it isn't going to interfere with anything else.  This is one of the main reasons that so many doctors refer their patients for acupuncture.

DO YOU PRESCRIBE CHINESE HERBAL REMEDIES?

Yes, if the addition of an herbal formula will enhance the overall treatment outcome, I will always discuss this option with patients.  I am nationally certified in Chinese Herbology and usually prefer to prescribe Evergreen Herbs products, either in capsules or powdered configurations.  This firm identifies and authenticates the correct species of all herbs provided, ensures safety and reliability with comprehensive analytical testing, and provides pharmaceutical-level production in the USA.

DO YOU ACCEPT INSURANCE?

I do not accept any insurance or communicate with insurance companies.  I can, upon request, provide you with a receipt that you can use for insurance filing.
